In Loving Memory Of Our Dear Friend Richard Marquardt
GARFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio — Richard A. Marquardt, 89, of Garfield Heights, Ohio, passed away at Villa St. Joseph on Jan. 9, 2009. “RA” was born May 12, 1919, in Garfield Heights; he was the first son of the late Marie and Alfred Marquardt.
He graduated from Garfield Heights High School in 1938, where he earned the Bausch and Lomb award for excellence in science. RA went on to attend Case Western Reserve, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. From 1943 to 1946, RA served in the U.S. Navy, where he was a radar technician on a minesweeper in the Pacific Theater. After returning from service, he began his career in electronics, ultimately retiring from Terex in 1980.
RA was scoutmaster of Troop 416 in Garfield Heights for a period spanning nearly three decades and will be missed by the hundreds of scouts that he worked with during his time as scoutmaster and friend. In addition to local Boy Scouts, he influenced many others from Pennsylvania and New York who took advantage of his generosity by camping at RA’s version of Shangri La — Camp Chickasaw in East Mead Township. RA enjoyed teaching new scouts their basic skills, fire building, knots, first aid and citizenship, and could always be counted on giving “clever” advice on better ways of doing any task.
