Take a piece of 6in. stovepipe about 2ft. long and drill 2 holes to place a damper in the middle.

Drill about a dozen more holes randomly around the pipe staying only on one half of the pipe being divided by the damper.

On the other half you need a handle. Drill a hole a few inches from the end and use s long bolt with nuts inside and out, tighten them in place.

Stand it on end on the grill with a handful of newspaper crumpled inside the end with all the holes. Make sure the damper is turned across the pipe and fill the top half with charcoal.

Light fire to the paper and give it about 5 min.. Use a couple of pot holders (cause its gonna be hot)

Grab the handle and turn the damper. You'll never by lighter fluid again.

Stick Trick to Unhook Fish

Works good! Reel simple.

Caught good one,but he did a moby dick with the hook--way down there. No more hooks,and no pliers? Use a smooth straight piece of any stick,(about pencil size). Now put the stick down the fish's yap to about the hook,or where the stick can't go down any further. Now pinch the line to the stick with your thumb and fore finger. Hold the stick and line together,like they were a paint stirrer,(about 2 or three inches up from the fish's mouth). Without letting the line move from where you have it pinched, spin the stick,line and fish in a clockwise motion. (Think of the stick and line as the handle of a paint brush, and the fish as the bristles) The spin & weight of the fish will cause the line,(and then the hook) to wrap around the stick. After a few spins, the hook will come loose, and the fish drop off. If the fish is a keeper,spin it over the boat, or bucket.

If it's not a keeper,spin it over the water,and it will just drop back in. This works so good it's scary!

Make a Homemade Fire Starter

These work good for starting a fire in your fireplace or outdoors and are easy to make.

Here are the materials you need;

1. Wax. This can be leftover candle drippings, candle stubs, etc.
2. Sawdust. Keep a can in your shop and save all that sawdust you make.
3. An egg carton.

Here are the instructions;

1. Melt the wax
2. Fill each section in the egg carton halfway with sawdust.
3. Fill each section the rest of the way with the melted wax
4. When cool, using scissors cut the individual egg carton sections apart (don't remove the wax, just leave it in there).

To use one, just light the edge with a match (the edge being the egg carton section that was left on it when cut).

Try this one and then post a comment. Curious whether it works. I just may try it with our guys.

After many nights of thinking and several changes I have decided that it is my responsibility to help bring about some change in our troop. As Boy Scout leaders it is our responsibility to bring about change when it is needed in our youth. Supplementing what we see may need some tweaking and building on what we know needs built on.
Our youth are changing, our times are changing and the peer pressure is changing for our children. After a talk with our Scoutmaster I feel as troop committee chairman that our boys need a little boost.They need some extra help to encourage them to be able to make the right choices. They need to see other youth that are their ages telling them what they would do in a situation where wrong and right are at stake.They need to know that there are good youth out there. That they can make the right choice and still remain cool per say.
Families are struggling just to make ends meet these days. Some families are struggling with helping their children to make the right choices and how they might go about doing this.Its a battle, peer pressure and mom and dad. Some families are absent from one another working sometimes 2 jobs just to make ends meet, making parenting very difficult these days.
Our youth are good and they are by far our most precious commodity. Far more important then any other issue our communities face today. Our troop is going to start with a plan which we will incorporate into activities and troop meetings with our scouts. My question is would you rather have responsible, honest, trustworthy, knowledgeable,loyal human beings caring for you and our country when you are elderly or the opposite. Would you feel safe with many of the teens on the streets handling your personal finances or would you trust them to make the right decision if it came to that? And I am not referring to ALL of today's teens,there are many kids out there doing exactly what needs to be done, and there are those that are truly struggling.
So how do we change this situation. Well change does not occur overnight and it has never happened by the people that just say, we need to change that. Change occurs when your action is taken. The first step is saying, we need some help here.Our teens really need some help here! The next step is finding that help then helping to bring about those changes. We have to be proactive in change. Believe that it can be done and then doing what needs to be done!!!!
To many times I hear today's youth are irresponsible, self centered and just no darn good. Well hello who taught them the simple and basic things they needed to do, how to use a spoon, open a door, tell the truth, responsibility, loyalty? Their elders, mom and dad,grandma and grandpa, youth leaders and yes their peers. Maybe have some of these things not had enough emphasis put on them. Telling the truth versus lies. Doing the right thing versus doing the wrong thing? I wonder.
Maybe we need to revisit the basics (thanks Scoutmaster Steve) Maybe we didn't stay quite long enough in them or elaborate enough on them.I think our boys are in need of a simple and basic thing..talking while someone truly just listens to them. Presenting them with situations and seeing if they are able to solve them and helping them solve them by making the right choices.Or just helping them be able to simply make the right choices. If we don't help our youth who is going to do that?
I am going to make Monday the day for now, since that's when our troop have our meetings, the day where we will either discuss or view something to help these guys build their character.

BSA Registration Fee Increase

The Executive Board of the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America unanimously passed a resolution at its business meeting on May 22, 2009, to increase the traditional membership registration fee for all youth and adults to $15 from its current $10, effective Jan. 1, 2010. The last fee increase — from $7 to $10 — was in 2003.

A great deal of thought and consideration went into this decision by both the Executive Board and the Membership Fee Task Force led by National Commissioner Tico Perez. Consideration was given to an expected deficit to the National Council operating budget, the impact to program and council support, the necessary funding required over the next several years, the cost of implementing fee increases annually in systems and forms, as well as the overall fees paid by councils. Input was sought and received from staff and volunteers at the council level. Finally, given all these considerations, it was determined that the best approach was to increase the fee to the level chosen and make every effort to hold that level for a period of at least three years.

Why is the membership fee being increased, especially now, during such difficult economic times?
The National Council is committed to providing added benefits to local councils and volunteers to support the delivery of high-quality Scouting programs in every community. A key investment continues to be in providing more user-friendly web-based resources. For example, via MyScouting.org, volunteers will be able to complete even more training requirements on their own schedule, 24 hours a day, via online resources. This will complement their current ability to recharter and manage advancement records online, complete and submit tour permits, and participate in the Scouting Community social network, which continues to grow. Also, in the future, new-member registration will be available online.

As good stewards, we strive to keep costs to a minimum. Even with this increase, youth can receive the full benefits of Scouting membership for only $1.25 per month.

The National Executive Board reviewed revenue and expense projections along with the planned initiatives over the next several years, recognizing that the annual registration fee would not meet expenses. The Board decided that the fee could be increased each year or every other year to keep pace with the expected expenditures, or that it could be raised to the level chosen and held in place over the next several years.

New Handbook Coming August 1st

Advertisements for the new handbook show a similiar but slightly modified cover. Instead of the “old fashion” Scout in the corner, there is now an Eagle.

The advertisements say the 12th Edition handbook will be available August 1st, 2009 and will be available in several different versions.

One can assume there will be a Spanish version, but what other versions will be available?

2010 Rank Requirement Changes

According to the National Boy Scouts of America Website, the centennial edition of the Boy Scout Handbook will soon be available, and with the new handbook come several rank requirement changes that will be in effect as of January 1, 2010. We’ve previously reported the new handbook is set to be available August 1st, 2009.

Here are the requirement changes, remember they take effect on January 1, 2010:

Tenderfoot
- A Scout must teach another person how to tie a square knot using the EDGE model (explain, demonstrate, guide, and enable).
- He must also be able to discuss four specific examples of how he lived the points of the Scout Law in his daily life.

Second Class
A Scout must discuss the principles of Leave No Trace and explain the factors to consider when choosing a patrol site and where to pitch a tent.
He must explain what respect is due the flag of the United States.
He must again discuss four examples of how he lived four different points of the Scout Law in his daily life.
He must earn an amount of money agreed upon by the Scout and his parents and save at least 50 percent of it.

First Class
An additional requirement to the 10 separate troop/patrol activities states he must demonstrate the principles of Leave No Trace on these outings.
He must discuss four more examples of how he lived the remaining four points of the Scout Law in his daily life.

Life
A Scout must use the EDGE model to teach a younger Scout a specified skill.

Star, Life, and Eagle
Troop Webmaster and Leave No Trace trainer are two new leadership positions.

Fact vs. Fiction In the Outdoors

Outdoors people are pretty good at spinning tall tales around a campfire, but sometimes they get their fact and fiction mixed up. Here are 10 often-quoted myths about camping.

1. One group of 15 creates more impact camping than three groups of five or five groups of three.

False. Research scientists studying the effects of Leave No Trace principles have proved that one large group has no more impact than several smaller groups. It is the techniques and behavior of a group that make the difference. Learn the principles of Leave No Trace at www.lnt.org.

2. Moss grows on the north side of trees.
And on the south side. And the east and west, too. Moss can grow anywhere that there is enough shade and moisture. Your best bet for determining direction is to bring a compass and know how to use it.

3. In cold weather, you don't have to drink a lot of water because you sweat less.
This is false on two counts. First, you lose much more water in the winter than you think. Winter air can be very dry, and the cool air wicks sweat away from you so quickly that you are often not even aware you are sweating.

Second, you need to drink more than you think because inadequate hydration contributes to both altitude sickness and to hypothermia. Start your day of winter hiking with a bottle of hot liquid shielded inside an insulated carrier: This will be more appealing to drink than ice-cold water.

4. Lightning doesn't strike twice in the same spot.
The summit of Mount Thielsen, a spiky peak in Oregon, is known as the "lightning rod of the Cascades." A glassy substance called fulgurite is formed by repeated lightning strikes, and you'll find it all over Thielsen's summit.

5. Magnetic declination (the deviation between true north and magnetic north shown on maps) never changes.
False. A variable navigators have long had to reckon with, declination varies with both geography and time. Over the past 36 years, for instance, the declination at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico has changed from 13.5 degrees to less than 9 degrees. For more information about declination visit the U.S. Geological Survey Web site at www.usgs.gov.

6. Hypothermia is a winter problem.
Yes. And a summer, spring, and fall one. Indeed, hypothermia can be even more insidious in milder seasons because it's not as obvious.

Hypothermia is a particular danger to paddlers, especially when the combination of air and water temperatures adds up to less than 150 degrees. Prolonged exposure to cold water—whether from water sports or rain—is a prime risk factor for hypothermia, even in the middle of summer.

Remember, the best cure for hypothermia is prevention, and the best prevention is to stop exposure: Put up a tent or put on more clothes.

7. If you come upon a grizzly bear and it charges, you can easily outrun it to safety.
Not even close. An aggressive, 300-pound grizzly can hit speeds of 30 miles per hour in a charge—that's 44 feet per second. To put that in perspective, an Olympic athlete who sprints to the finish line of a 100-yard dash in 10 seconds is only traveling at 30 feet per second.

Stephen Herrero, author of Bear Attacks (Lyons Press, revised edition 2002), says the best thing to do in a grizzly encounter is to stand your ground or slowly back away and talk to the bear, letting it know that you aren't a threat. Avoid staring directly at the bear, which threatens it, but watch it closely.

8. Natural fabrics are the best choice for going out in nature.
Wool and silk can be good choices, but cotton, frequently touted as "nature's fabric," is a definite no-no for outdoor recreation. Check out the newest outdoor clothing manufactured with wicking synthetics.

9. You'll find the warmest campsites down on a valley floor.
Not necessarily. While ridges tend to be windier, chillier places than valleys, a narrow, steep-sided valley can collect what is known as katabatic air at night. As the air cools, warmer air rises, and colder air flows in to take its place. Don't climb to the top of the ridge to make camp, but keep off the valley floor too.

10. An upset stomach in the backcountry is probably caused by giardia.
Maybe; maybe not. Giardia usually takes at least a week to incubate, so unless you're on a long-distance hike, it's unlikely that today's stomachache is caused by yesterday's drink.

Other waterborne parasites can also cause intestinal distress, but backcountry stomach problems are often caused by careless sanitary practices—sharing food dishes with other campers and improperly cleaning pots, pans, and utensils. Wash your hands thoroughly before cooking and eating, and wash your pots thoroughly afterward.

Want to play it safe when enjoying fun-in-the-sun Scouting this summer? Here's how to protect your body from harmful, cancer-causing UV rays.

Sunburn First Aid
Summer camp, high adventure trips, vacations at the beach -- all offer exciting possibilities within the next few months. But though spending time outdoors is both healthy and refreshing, you can get too much of a good thing.

“Eighty percent of an adult’s sun damage happens before the age of 18,” says Dr. Roy Rogers, a dermatology professor at the Mayo Medical School and Clinic. Early exposure can cause skin damage that appears decades later: wrinkling, premature aging, and skin cancers, including the potentially deadly malignant melanomas.

“We’re seeing an epidemic of skin cancers,” Dr. Rogers says. As a former volunteer Scouter, Dr. Rogers knows all about the benefits of outdoor exercise. “We don’t want people to stay in caves,” he says. “But they need to protect themselves. Every sunburn you avoid is good news.”

Most people realize they’re at risk on a sunny day at the beach, but what about those cool, cloudy days high in the mountains? Protect yourself there, too, Rogers recommends. The thinner air and glaring snow increase your risk of sunburn, even if there’s no sun in sight.

Similarly, the water that refreshes you while canoeing, rafting, or kayaking also reflects sunlight and increases the danger of sunburn even though you’re less likely to notice it.

“It’s not just the sunlight coming down on you,” Dr. Rogers says. “It’s what’s reflected at you.” And because the strongest sunlight occurs between 10 A.M. and 4 P.M., be aware that those are the most dangerous times of the day.

In addition, some people with blue eyes, light skin, and light or red hair just face a greater risk.

Sunscreen basics

UV-A and UV-B rays both cause sunburn, so you’ll notice when you’ve been overexposed. But UV-A rays are more insidious. “They penetrate more deeply,” says Dr. Rogers. “While they don’t cause immediate, visible damage, they cause long-term damage, including skin cancers.”

To prevent that damage, get a good sunscreen. The numerical SPF (sun protection factor) rates how long you’ll be protected. If you normally burn after 10 minutes in direct sunlight, a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 protects you -- theoretically, at least -- for 150 minutes (your “normal” burn time of 10 minutes times the SPF factor of 15). However, the amount of sunscreen applied, variations in skin type, sweating, time of day, altitude, and exposure to water can change the effective SPF.

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends a SPF rating of at least 15. FDA regulations set
the maximum SPF rating at 30 (sun-screens above that can carry a rating of 30+). But don’t let a high SPF lull you into a false sense of security: Very few sunscreens provide all-day protection, and it’s always advisable to reapply sunscreen after exercise or swimming.

Although SPF applies only to UV-B rays, not the potentially more dangerous UV-A rays, most sunscreens on the market do protect against UV-A rays. Read the label.

If you’re hoarding sunscreen from your trip to the Florida sea base five years ago, trash it. Sunscreens degrade over time, so it’s not only past the expiration date, it’s ineffective against UV-A rays.

You can also boost UV-A protection by using zinc oxide, titanium dioxide (the thick, white goop lifeguards wear on their nose), or the sunscreen avobenzone, which effectively blocks both UV-A and UV-B rays.

Sunscreens come in all sorts of formulas: moisturizing, hypoallergenic, scented. Some even offer insect protection. However, Dr. Rogers recommends keeping your purchase choices simple. “Inexpensive drugstore brands perform just as well as expensive name brands, as long as they protect against both kinds of rays and have the same SPF.” If you plan to participate in water activities, choose waterproof brands.

For maximum absorption, apply the recommended amount of sunscreen to dry skin 15 to 30 minutes before exposure. Ask someone to help apply it to hard-to-reach areas, and don’t overlook the back of your neck, your feet and toes, around your ears, and the backs of your knees. Also, choose a lip balm with the highest SPF you can find, especially if you are susceptible to cold sores, which can be exacerbated by exposure to the sun.

Clothing

Desert dwellers dealing with blistering sun every day wear head-to-toe, loose-fitting robes that provide ventilation and shade. Follow their example by dressing in long pants and long sleeves. Choose clothing that moves easily without being so loose that it catches on rocks or branches.

Some manufacturers make clothing designed for sun protection. Look for comfort features such as breathable fabrics, ventilation flaps, and the ability to wick away moisture. For maximum protection, the fabric’s weave should be tight, and check to see if the material has an SPF rating.

The Solumbra line from Sun Precautions, at www.sunprecautions.com, or ExOfficio’s sun protection line, at www.exofficio.com, can have an SPF of up to 30 or more.

For a less expensive alternative to buying items manufactured with SPF material, add it to the clothing you already own in the washing machine. RIT (www.Ritdye.com) makes a product called SunGuard that, when applied according to directions, can increase clothing’s SPF rating from 4 (a typical T-shirt) to 30 (the strongest sunscreen). SunGuard lasts up to 20 washings.

To protect your face, neck, or ears, shade it with a hat with a wide brim (think Indiana Jones or a cowboy). An Australian-style, floppy brimmed bush hat or a Tilley hat make good picks, as does a Foreign Legion-style hat, with a visor in front and flap in back to protect your neck. Tilley hats also deliver maximum SPF protection besides shade. Experts don’t recommend baseball caps. No matter how you wear them, the brim only protects one side of your head.

Choose a light-colored hat that reflects more light and helps keep your head cool.

Sunglasses

Medical evidence suggests that while long-term exposure to the sun can contribute to the formation of cataracts, short-term exposure is dangerous, too.

Dr. Rogers notes that at high altitudes reflected rays of the sun can burn the corneas, causing snow blindness. He advises you to wear sunglasses when climbing, even on cloudy days. Canoeists, kayakers, and whitewater rafters should wear them, too, because glare off the water can cause eye damage over time.

Look for glasses that fit snugly.

Mountaineering glasses have ventilated leather side flaps, which block light from coming in from the sides. In less severe environments, you can wear clip-on sunglasses over prescription eyewear, but at high altitudes, you need complete eye protection.

What do you do when, despite all your warnings to lather up with sunscreen, several summer-camp Scouts show up at your tent with lobster-red complexions?

Here’s the advice of Mayo Clinic dermatologist Dr. Roy Rogers.

Avoid giving aspirin to youth and teens for pain because it has been associated with Reye’s syndrome, a central nervous system disorder. Instead dispense acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Advil), or naproxen (Aleve).

Apply a moisturizing cream. Aloe vera works well, as does Eucerin, Vanicream, Lubriderm, Neutrogena, and similar over-the-counter ointments.

Use cool compresses with bath towels and water, or take a cool bath.

If blisters form, don’t rupture them. The serum inside contains healing properties.

Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.

Each of our young men are unique, each are special. We are so proud of our guys and the responsible decisions that they make and the paths that each have chosen to take. We have boys that have chosen athletics others are involved in their community. Many are just enjoying scouting and are active and involved.
Scouting has many opportunities for our young men. Our troop is planning a very active 2010. Sports and the outdoors. Fun and excitement. We are really looking forward to a great year.
I think what really makes great leaders is an honest understanding for the individual itself. The uniquness of each of the boys. Learning what makes everybody tick. Each boy responds to a different thing. It takes great leaders to bring that out and to nourish it.
Training and ongoing learning. Just as in life you are always learning as leaders. A little planning and some good ideas and just great fun.
Boy Scouting has been one of the truly greatest opportunities I have had in my life. A very rewarding and honorable event I will always look upon in this life. Some parents just don't know what they are missing. Some say I really don't do dirt and bugs, well we do and we do it well. Nothing like some great bugs and dirt...love it! Others say I'm not the outdoors type, well we are, would rather be outdoors then in. I would rather be Kayaking right now but have to write this post. Just mention climbing or creeks or mud or bugs and I'm there.

Thats what makes us so lucky,its that part of the boys that we get to enjoy with them, we share their love for just being crazy and dirty and messy and funny and strange at times. They get to be who they really are...Boys! Fun loving creatures. Wet shoes and dirty smelly socks and mud to their eyeballs. Nobody cares and nobody yells and they are fine and so are we. Hey its their feet and they don't care. It's the experience. Thats why we are blessed. I'm so glad to be a member of Boy Scouts and I can't ever imagine it being any other way! Thanks boys I think you are each.... Making Your Own Way! Follow the music YOU Hear! That is very hard in todays world but I think each of you is finding the perfect tunes!

Here they are, our great little guys. Happily drudging their belongings to their camping area. Isn't it great. Just about the best spot ever. Hand picked by our fearless Scoutmaster Steve and his Assistant Scoutmaster Joe. These little guys are happy anywhere, they do not care if you put them in a tree, as long as they are camping. Thats what scoutings all about. The fun and adventure. Notice the trees behind them. On the other side of the trees a babbling creek. This will prove to be the greatest weekend ever. Camping beside a stream, think of the adventure. Playing in the stream. 2 of our older scouts decided to camp right along the creek. Now that's brave.

Our favorite is by far sitting at the campfire and reminiscing about our past camp outs over the years, making memories like this weekend. We will always remember and recall this just like all the rest. We so much enjoy our weekends with the boys. It is a privilege and honor to have a part in these young men's lives. That's scouting. That is why I do this blog. I hope in the future our guys will always look at this and say I belong to that family also....my scouting family. It is an extended family. We feed, protect, care, nourish the spirit, pray and laugh with our boys. We love each and everyone of them for who they are. They are all individuals and each are different and each are special. It doesn't take long to learn what makes them tick. And it doesn't take long to know and fall in love with each of them. So many boy's have come and gone. Many have stayed. We always stop at some point to remember the ones that are no longer with our scouting family. Maybe someday hey will wonder back and maybe not but when we see them we know they will always remember the time they spent with us .....making memories, just being boys.

Well they were telling the truth. No joke folks it was a real flood. It rained so hard over the night and early morning the beautiful creek over flowed its banks and whalah.......flood. The camp that took 2 hours to erect took 5 minutes to carry to higher ground. Really about 10 minutes. All we could do was basically watch it rise. The boys really just absolutely loved it. Playing in the water was just he coolest thing. So we moved to higher ground and all was well. Oh notice the tent of our 2 brave campers their tent did not survive. It is now a tarp. Oh well life goes on.

Everyone is looking forward to nightfall. The sounds of nature. Don't forget that beautiful creek lulling you to sleep. Smores and roasting marshmallows and football in the dark. Its a scout thing. Never do the obvious. Like attempt to catch a football with the sunlight in your eyes. Go for the moonlight, its just better light you know. Anyways it took a few hours to set up camp maybe a little less. Then it was fire time. And that's always another story. Thank our dear lord it wasn't cold that's all I can say. The boys always work so well together as a team. And they have a great team. They do what needs to be done to accomplish their task. Their camp is always neat, tents another story. But thats what zippers are for. Poof it's gone. Anyways there is so much more to our story so we must move along. Everything was just perfect......then....oh my!

Then at 5AM all your worst fears come true. Nothing like 2 boy scouts bright and Early in the am, on a day when you really don't have to be up at 5 AM, running around like chickens with their heads cut off screaming.....there's a flood everyone up! Something in your mind says darn now that's a real nightmare and something says....I need to respond. Then there is the 40 something body saying ....well don't respond real fast there is plenty of time. Then you continue to sleep ignoring the impending...Flood!

Yes folks it was the great Custaloga Town Flood 2009! Who would have thought. I would like to send a shout out to Drew and Mat for basically saving us from mere devastation and an early morning swim.

We have some wonderful dads in our troop. Beginning with our scoutmaster, assistant scoutmaster and also the dads of our great boys. We are blessed. We finished up our day with the boys and had a awesome weekend, flood and all. I will post pictures tomorrow. There are allot. Following the flood, everything worked out just fine and we carried on making more great memories with our scouts. Wonderful fathers day and a wonderful experience for the scouts. Hard to believe that only months ago when I started this blog it would have been for anyone but our boys. But it has become far more than that. I am so thrilled when I receive comments from readers or requests to use our posts. I work really hard trying to find the most Scout appropriate material for our leaders and boys. To look at the hit counter and see it roll over 600 is awesome both for myself and for our Troop. It means that we are doing our best! Our best to get our young men in an area where they are far more intelligent than we elders......the internet. Yes the great power of the internet. There is the good and the bad as in all of life. We only hoped to make our site not only good but GREAT! Following the values of scouting.

I would feel very honored to know that somewhere some young scout is able to learn, if only one thing or get a laugh and a smile for the day. The French Creek Council of the BSA and the French Creek Living History Association will host a series of living history events at Custaloga Town Boy Scout Reservation on Father's Day Weekend, June 20 and 21, 2009

Walk among the tents and view camp life of the 1750s. Listen to lectures on local 18th century history by respected historians.The encampment will be open for public view from 9am to 7pm on Saturday, June 20, and from 9am to 4pm on Sunday, June 21, 2009.

The two-day encampment will include a blacksmith, 18th-century gunsmiths/gun dealers, powder horn makers/engravers, a woodland Native American camp, cannon and musket firing demonstrations, French and Native fur trade scenarios, live tactical engagements, Baroque + Folk Music Concert each afternoon and French & Indian War era painters.

Paul Stillman returns as Ben Franklin with his glass armonica. He will also conducting workshops on quill pens, powder horns and a brain tan program.

Now this is really going to make you smile. We love the wildlife especially bears. Our boys got to see a few 2 years ago at Calumet in Bradford, Pa. A few of the troops got to see them really up close and personal. That is they were personal with their doughnuts that were raising while the troop enjoyed their activities. Needless to say, they never saw those doughnuts. It is very important to respect nature and to respect our wildlife. Also to remember what they are capable of. Personally there are times I myself would tear up a camp for a crispy creme but that's another story for another day. So for now just remember to....Leave No Trace. That includes DOUGHNUTS!

Dutch Oven Cobbler- Sure To Be A Hit At Your Next Campout

Dutch Oven Cobbler

Ingredients:

1 can of cherry pie filling
1 can of crushed pineapple
1 box of yellow cake mix (not the pudding-type)
1 cube butter
1 small package of chopped walnuts
Directions:

Dump both cans of fruit on the bottom of a foil-lined 12″ dutch oven (spray with pam cooking spray before lining with tin foil).
Spread the yellow cake mix evenly on top of the filling (just pour it right out of the package).
Dice the cube of butter in small chunks and drop it as evenly as possible on top of the cake mix.
Sprinkle the chopped walnuts on top of the mix.
Cover and bake around 350 degrees for about 45-50 minutes – you want the top of the cobbler brown and bubbly, and not too dark. (I use 22-23 briquettes, with around 9 underneath the oven. I don’t replace them during cooking).
Rotate the oven AND the lid every 15 minutes.
The butter melts into the cake mix and it comes out so good. As you can see it’s a very easy dessert to make. While it’s baking the scent of pineapple and cherry starts to flow around you. I think I’ve had a request to make this at every campout I’ve been on.

Instead of cherry pie filling you could add a can of blackberries – it tastes good with them too. And you can try different fruits to suit your taste, even fresh fruits. (If you use fresh fruit you should mix them with a little sugar first.)

Top it off with some whip cream and you are set for the evening! And if you can smuggle some vanilla ice cream to the campout, this is great a-la-mode.

A consortium of federal agencies and nonprofit organizations and the recreation industry today announced details for National Get Outdoors Day 2009, an annual event to encourage healthy, active outdoor fun across the nation. On June 13, 2009, participating organizations will offer sites for American families to sample both traditional and new types of outdoor activities. Prime goals of the day are reaching first-time visitors to public lands and reconnecting our youth to the great outdoors, and then invite those taking part in the day to visit specific sites for fun “EChO-Events” for opportunities to hike with rangers, learn to fish, and go mountain biking.

In June 2008, more than 60 National Get Outdoors Day events were held, drawing tens of thousands of youth and their families. The events included climbing walls, chances to have pictures taken with Smokey Bear, introductions to fishing and new activities like geocaching and much more.

Lessons From The Geese

We live in an area where geese are very common. We see them coming in the Fall and leaving early Spring. Their migration is an awesome sight. There is an interdependence in the way geese function.
FACT: As each bird flaps its wings, it creates an "uplift" for the bird following. By flying in a "V" formation, the whole flock adds 71% greater flying range than if each bird flew alone.
LESSON: People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going quicker and easier because they are traveling on the thrust of one another.
FACT: Whenever a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to fly alone. It quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the "lifting power" of the bird immediately in front.
LESSON: If we have as much sense as a goose, we will stay in formation with those who are headed where we want to go.
FACT: When the lead goose gets tired, it rotates back into the formation and another goose flies at the point position.
LESSON: It pays to take turns doing the hard tasks and sharing leadership--people, as with geese, are interdependent with each other.
FACT: The geese in formation honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.
LESSON: We need to make sure our "honking" from behind is encouraging, not something less helpful.
FACT: When a goose gets sick or wounded or shot down, two geese drop out of formation to follow him [her] down to help and protect him [her]. They stay with him [her] until [s]he is either able to fly again or dies. Then they launch out on their own with another formation or catch up with their flock.
LESSON: If we have as much sense as the geese, we will stand by each other.

Here at Troop 51 the talk is all about our Sean. We have an Eagle Ceremony coming up. We are celebrating Sean,our first Eagle Scout from the Troop. Oh are we ever proud of this young man. His parents are bubbling over with pride and joy at which they have every right.What an accomplishment. 2 of every 100 scouts will become an Eagle Scout. I as a leader am simply in awe. Sean has done a tremendous job completing his Eagle Scout and deserves to hold his head high with extreme pride for his accomplishment. We with great pride and happiness present to you our first Eagle Scout here at Troop 51.

This is simply some of the greatest information for leaders and scouts that I have come across in a while. A great video to have your scouts view. It's a long one but as I said it's great information as well. With hikes taking place and warmer weather upon us this is "Don't go without it information" for all scouts. It may not occur at campouts it may occur with their families out in the wilderness but the moral here is...Always be prepared! This is really great in the perspective of, if you don't have a lot of experience which many of our boys do not (although they think they do) this will be of great use. This post should be entitled...A Good Dig at your Scoutmaster. Scoutmaster Steve had a bit of a hard time with our Friday night campfire. First it wouldn't light then it refused to burn. And for all the boy's (men) that did not get a chance to hear the gentleman at Camp Chickasaw speak about fire starting....here's a little refresher course. Now most of the woman in our troop don't have problems with this so you may want to encourage all the men to watch so you do not freeze to death while they struggle. Only God can create such beautiful creatures and sun sets as the ones in this slide show. The photography is absolutely striking. I came across this while looking for pictures for a project that I am working on for our Eagle Scout. I thought I would share it with the Troop. As it says in the end, only God can create this type of beauty. This is so very true. As Scouts we strive to take care of our enviornment and preserve nature. Leave no trace principles we firmly encourage in our young men. If we don't care for it, how many will. Each and every one of us makes a difference. We can only take beautiful pictures such as the ones that you will see in this slideshow, if we care for what God has given us. Let's all make a firm commitment as leaders to show this beauty to our scouts and to show them how we can care for it. Let's encourage them to learn as much as we can teach them before it is to late. Creek Fun And A Little Reptile Identification

The boys had a great time in the water with temperatures soaring up in the 80's it was a welcome relief from the heat. They headed there every time they were allowed. Apparently there were quite a few critters to identify and that was the funny part. Well there is a Reptile and Amphibian Study Merit Badge. GOOD LUCK Scoutmaster Steve and Assistant Scoutmaster Joe. OOPS.....Sorry. Teenagers are so funny. Especially Troop 51 teens. If I didn't hear, don't take my picture...no more pictures, once this weekend, I may have heard it a thousand times. Well all I can say is OOP's, sorry guys again. Why 2 such great looking young men would not want to have their pic taken is beyond me. But you know what, they are also simply the most amazing boys I have ever been surrounded by in my entire life. They live the Scout Law everyday. Their kindness and consideration for others is something we must all be in awe about all the time. Below you see our 2 upcoming Eagle Scouts. On the right the gentlemen is very close and has a planned Eagle project. On the left all I can say is, hanging with the right inspiration and has several years, but is definitely on the right track. Keep it up guys. Great job. All I can say is guys you have the right stuff and your on the trail to Eagle.

Dutch oven cooking with just a little cheating. Yes I said cheating as you will see. We were having a hard time browning bacon fast enough. When your cooking for 16 people it's all about the speed. Hey Mr Joe whats for lunch, whats for supper and whats for snack tends to make a body rush at times. Especially when it's times 10 and your cooking in a dutch oven. All and all it was perfect and there were no leftovers so I guess it was great. Yum....Yum. It's a great art. I do mean art. It will take alot of practice but we have plenty of time and plenty of Guinea pigs to test on. Thanks Troop 51 hope your all full and you enjoyed the great food. In the pot is Mountain Man Breakfast which was....GONE in just 10 minutes. It was GREAT.

This trailer just rocks. Stuffed to the gills and a lot of planning, it is finally done. Everything in it's place. The boy's really enjoyed not carrying their gear. Definitely a great find. 35th Annual De-Un-Da-Ga Memorial Day Pow Wow At Custaloga Town

What a great weekend. The Wow describes it. These individuals are trully dedicated to the art. They did a wonderful job of presenting Native American Dance each and every one of them. The boys had a wonderful weekend. This is a yearly event hosted by Custaloga Town Scout Reservation and sponsored byLangundowi Lodge #46. A truly beautiful setting for the event. At nightfall the dancers just come alive and knock your socks off. Each are dressed in Native American costume that are beautifully done. If your troop has not attended this event you will have to attend. This is one of those you just got to be there. What a spectacular weekend. All and all it went fairly smoothly with only a few small glitches. I may be partial to our young men but most times I can only sit back and smile, you just can't help it, these boys are awesome, no tremendous. They trully make us so proud as leaders.

Chivalry to Others
"In days of old, when knights were bold", it must have been a fine sight to see one of these steel-clad horsemen come riding through the dark green woods in his shining armour, with shield and lance and waving plumes, bestriding his gallant war-horse, strong to bear its load, and full of fire to charge upon an enemy. And near him rode his squire-a young man, his assistant and companion, who would some day become a knight.
Behind him rode his group, or patrol, of men-at-arms-stout, hearty warriors, ready to follow their knight to the gates of death if need be. They were the tough yeomen of the old days, who won so many fine fights for their country through their pluck and loyal devotion to their knights.
In peace time, when there was no fighting to be done, the knight would daily ride about looking for a chance of doing a good turn to any needing help, especially a woman or child who might be in distress. When engaged in thus doing good turns, he was called a "Knight Errant". The men of his patrol naturally acted in the same way as their leader, and a man-at-arms was always equally ready to help the distressed with his strong right arm.
The knights of old were the patrol leaders of the nation, and the men-at-arms were the Scouts.
You patrol leaders and Scouts are therefore very like the knights and their retainers, especially if you keep your honour ever before you, and do your best to help other people who are in trouble or who want assistance.

Your motto is "Be Prepared" to do this, and the motto of the knights was a similar one, "Be Always Ready"...

'YAGODDAWANNA'

In the great NorthWest where I grew up, I met a mountain man and he knew how to get many things done with very little resources. He had almost nothing to work with, but accomplished great things.
Whether the task was to build a fire underwater or stop a waterfall from falling, it seemed he could take care of it. I was so amazed to see the things he could do, I finally asked him how he did it.

He told me that a long time ago, he had found a magical solution to nearly all challenges that came along. He said it was all contained in a single, ancient word that had mystic powers. When you understand the meaning of the word, it unleashes immense strength and abilities; it makes your mind more clear; it makes your imagination run wild with ideas.

Well, of couse, I could hardly contain myself and I just had to know what this powerful magic was. I pleaded with him to tell me and he finally agreed.

He said the word is, 'YAGODDAWANNA'.

In order to accomplish anything, whether it is small or big, easy or difficult, trivial or of utmost importance, in order to be successful, you've got to want to do it. To earn good grades, you gotta wanna earn them. To become an Eagle Scout, ya godda wanna be one. The main reason people don't succeed at something is because they don't really want it bad enough. By really wanting something, you come up with ideas, make plans, and then do it.

Remember, to do something YaGoddaWanna do it.

UNSAYING MY WORDS

This Minute is meant for Boy Scouts.

Think about the impact of your words before you say them. You can not take back something you've said.

Once there were two Indian boys that were very good friends. They explored, fished, and hunted together. They were both great athletes and well-liked by all in their tribe.

In there village there was also a young girl that they both began to like and compete for. One of the boys, out of jealousy, told the girl that the other boy had done something very bad which would disgrace him and his family. This was completely untrue.
Afterwards, the boy felt ashamed of what he had done. He told the girl that he had lied and he apologized to his friend for what he had said.

But, as he walked around the village, he could here others repeating the false words he had spoken about his friend. Very troubled by this, he went to the tribal medicine man for advice.

'How can I undo this terrible thing I have done?', he asked.
The wise man told him, 'Shoot 3 ducks and 3 geese. Pull off all their feathers and put them in a leather bag. Bring me the bag and the birds.'
The boy did this. He gave the birds to the wise man and the wise man said, 'Now, take the bag of feathers to the top of the great mountain, open it, and shake out all the feathers. Then, return here.'
The boy climbed the mountain, released all the feathers into the wind, and returned to the wise man.
The wise man said, 'Now, go back up the mountain and pick up every single feather you released and put them back in your bag.'
The boy replied, 'But, that is not possible. The feathers have blown far away. I can never recover all of them.'
The wise man said, 'So it is with your words.'

We are blessed. We are really going to have an awesome 2009 season. We have a really great bunch of young men. We have many great activities planned as usual this season.....ought to be a wonderful year. If you have stumbled across our website and our interested in your son joining a troop, Troop 51 is the troop for you. We would love to have you come and check us out.Be sure to check out our location on the Gogle map. Also check out our dates and activities. Our boys have done some really great team work over the winter and participated in the Klondike Derby winning several awards for their troop. The boys have alot of overnight and weekend camping trips planned and we are really excited for them. We will be camping at Camp Chickasaw in Meadville, PA our favorite spot. Also we will be attending Erie Presque Isle Days in Erie, PA. On that same weekend we are also looking forward to possibly staying at the KOA Campground with our scouts and having a really great time. We are in the process of planning fundraisers with our young men so that all can attend reasonably and all can have a great time. We can't forget or really big campout at Calumet in August 2009. See you at our next meeting hopefuly.

The grandfather's answer sums up in a few short words the dilemma we often experience. It is not easy to be positive when things go bad, which is of course exactly when being positive is most important. But how can we change our thinking? Here's how I do it: When someone hurts me badly, I write a detailed letter to him or her, describing my disappointment, my anger, and my bruised ego. And then I read it, read it again and again, and eventually, after a few days, weeks or even months, I tear it up and never send it. This exercise draws off negativity and helps me discover the positive side of life again. It allows my "Life wolf" to win.

David Pogue Interviews Shai Agassi Posted by: Andrew Price on March 20, 2009 at 4:37 pm The New York Times tech/gadget guy David Pogue did a great video profile of Shai Agassi and his innovative electric car company Better Place, which is designed around a sort of pay-by-use cell phone model. Video below.

Pogue’s conclusion: “[Agassi’s idea] is just crazy enough, it might work.” So Pogue doesn’t go out on any limbs predicting success or failure.

What are we doing to save the planet. Just ask Shai Agassi. A man with an idea that may change our planet and the way we see cars and energy. Is it crazy maybe, is our energy crisis crazy...absolutely. Is this earth heading for something good......you better believe it. Maybe this is it. Maybe Shai is onto something here. We have such creative and innovative minds out there.....who will listen. President Obama is listening and he is acting. God bless you President Obama for so hard to make a future for our children. Newdow, a Sacramento doctor and lawyer, used a similar argument when he challenged the Pledge of Allegiance in public schools because it contains the words “under God.”

A Scout Is Reverent

Next to my love for family is most definitely my love for God. That is my very personal belief and I am in no way ashamed of it. We all have something we believe in. To all that may not be the same God. Still it is something or somebody that you hope in and believe in, but maybe is not clearly visible to the human eye.This is not intended to be a sermon although it may seem that way, it is not. Everyone believes in something, whether that be that tomorrow will be a better day or that your financial situation will be better, there is a belief and a hope there. What does that have to do with a scout is reverent well.....Even if our young boys do not have their foot planted firmly in the church, we still hope that they will find their way to God and therefore find their way to goodness and grace. That may never be within the walls of a brick and mortar church it may only be within their hearts. We as leaders may be the same. I think God knows everyones heart no matter where you are standing or where you are falling or failing. He knows us inside and out because that is what I believe and that is what I know. Our scouts rely on us to lead them in the direction that God FIRST tells us to lead them. I think that he oversees every event and every meeting we have. I think he enables us to have the funds to do and to provide for these young gentlemen. I believe that we as leaders teach reverence by our actions. We teach them that even though we are tired, we still stand before them and are patient and kind and caring and well I guess GOD like. (God never tires of us or of our mistakes) Those are Godly ways and we only hope that those characteristics show and will rub off on them. We certainly would love they attend church but they may never. But if one of these young men, just one, someday saves someones life, defends his country becomes a doctor or just simply someone that smiles and brings joy into others lives than I guess we have made our scouts reverent. The definition of reverent is: showing great reverence for god; "a godly man"; "leading a godly life" worshipful

So I guess the question is.......Are you showing your scouts how they can be reverent.

This is one of my favorite passages from the bible, from Psalms my favorite book. These are the great songs of our bible. Please take time to read and a minute to be a reverent scout. Have a wonderful Sunday and God bless....

These courses join a growing list of courses that include:
- Not started Youth Protection Training
- Safe Swim Defense
- Safety Afloat
- Staffing the District Committee
- Weather Hazards
- and more specific Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Venturing related trainings.

As a reminder, after Jan 1st, 2009, one leader on each outing is required to have completed the Weather Hazards training.

As a result of the FDA expanding the Peanut Corporation of America’s (PCA) Salmonella related recall to include all peanut ingredient products produced in PCA’s Plainview, Texas facility since March 2005, Weaver Popcorn Company, Inc. has issued a precautionary voluntary recall for the following product:

The 12 oz. (340g) Trail’s End Chocolatey Peanut Clusters is one of five separately packaged products included in our Trail’s End® Chocolate Lovers Tin package. The remaining four separately packaged products are not subject to any recall.

“Although we have not received a single health related complaint or any reports of illness related to this product, we are taking this voluntary precautionary action out of an abundance of caution and
consistent with our 80-year unwavering commitment to consumer safety and to providing the highest-quality products,” said Mike Weaver, Weaver Popcorn Company President and CEO.

Since the vast majority of this product has not been sold for a number of months, it is assumed that what has been sold has been consumed. Consumers who have open bags of this product are urged to destroy it. Consumers with an unopened Trail’s End 12 oz. (340g) Chocolatey Peanut Clusters foil bag, with the above listed code dates, can arrange for a refund by calling 1-800-782-4255 (Monday
through Friday from 8:00am – 3:00pm EST).

Our Eagle Scout (Future Eagles)

I was playing around with some pictures and superimposed 2 pictures and this was a complete surprise. A great surprise though. These are the oldest boys in the troop. 1 is already an Eagle Scout. The other 2 I am now convinced will also be. Call it divine intervention I guess. The eagle is directly over our first eagle scout Sean and surrounded by our next 2. Now this is divine. We are so very proud of our boys, I think they have no idea ,even though we tell them often enough how much pride they bring to our lives. Thanks Sean, Mat and all our boys of Troop 51. We applaud you for sticking it out and for being such great kids in these times where it is hard just to be a kid.

Tuesday Nights Meeting

In case you missed the meeting we had on Tuesday. We talked about Citizenship In The Community. The merit badge we are currently working on. I posted a picture earlier in the week and just got around today to posting the rest sorry guys, life happens. Anyways here are a few more from our meeting. We are really glad that Troop 100 and Troop 98 decided to sit in on this one. This is an Eagle required merit badge. Scoutmaster Steve did a great job. He is our merit badge counselor for Citizenship In The Community.
